Getting Started in Powder Coating

A typical Batch System for Powder Coating consists of a Pretreatment Washer, Batch Oven, Powder Paint Booth, Powder Gun, Paint Hopper and a Transport Cart.

Powder Coating Procedure:
1. Place the parts to be powder coated on a paint rack or part hanger(s).
2. Place the rack(s) of parts on the transport cart.
3. Clean and pre-treat the parts using a manual operated pretreatment station.
4. Dry the parts in a open shop area or use the batch oven as a dry-off oven.
5. Powder coat the parts.
6. Place the transport cart of powder coated parts inside the batch
oven to be cured.
7. Normal cure time is 15 to 45 minutes depending on the weight and size of parts
8. Remove the transport cart from the oven
9. Cool down the parts in a designated area

Equipment Description

Parts Rack: A fixture designed to hold parts on a rack using hooks or wires.

Transport Cart: A steel cart with casters designed to carry a number of part racks from
one operation to another.

Pretreatment Washer: A manual pretreatment system using chemicals to clean, iron phosphate, rinse or seal the parts. The pretreatment tank is heated. The pretreatment station requires an operator to clean and pre-treat the parts.

Batch Oven: The batch oven can be used to dry off parts after pretreatment and is used to cure the powder coated parts. The oven is gas fired and operates up to 500 degrees F.

Powder Paint Booth: The powder booth consist of sheet metal panels, paint filters, exhaust fan & motor and fluorescent lights. The booth is designed to reclaim the filtered exhaust air back into the building, thus eliminating the expense of an make up air unit

Paint Application Equipment: Consist of self contained powder gun and controls, fully adjustable and a box or paint hopper
